Australian suburbs ranked at number 5 and 10 in the world scored local media coverage amid global attention
Time Out’s 2020 list of the top 40 coolest suburbs in the world has sparked debate, controversy, community pride and an extraordinary degree of press coverage.
More than 300 articles were published globally in the first 24 hours after the publication of the list on October 6. In Australia, the story was picked up by The Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail Australia, Lifehacker, Seven News (Sydney and Melbourne), Ten News, Nine News, Australian Financial Review, Domain.com and the Herald Sun among others.
The poll, to which 38,000 readers responded internationally, asked readers to nominate the coolest suburb in their city, and the results were assessed and ranked by Time Out’s editors to formulate the final list.
Western Melbourne suburb Yarraville was ranked fifth coolest neighbourhood in the world, while Marrickville in Sydney’s Inner West achieved the number 10 spot. Proud Marrickville local Anthony Albanese was quoted by different outlets about his suburb’s ranking.
Esquerra de l’Eixample in Barcelona took out the number one spot in the list, followed by Downtown Los Angeles and Sham Shui Po in Hong Kong.
This year’s Time Out Index poll found that “it’s cool to be kind” and that 2020’s coolest neighbourhoods “are the areas where people, community and businesses have helped each other through shared tribulations: places that represent the soul of the city”.
The release of the list coincides with Time Out’s international rebranding as ‘the soul of the city’, signalling an emphasis on kindness and rebuilding in the face of the upheavals of the pandemic.
