Time Out’s 50 best restaurants 2017

It’s one of our National Food and Drink Editor’s hardest tasks of the year. Once our Food Awards are over, we overhaul one of our tentpole features: the 50 best restaurants list

These lists, which exist in Sydney and Melbourne, require hundreds of hours to get right. We visit and check every restaurant, deliberate over who should go in which spot, and why. It’s this time and energy – this critical lens – that makes Time Out lists such winners for our readers. They know nothing we feature in this list is aggregated or arbitrary. It’s all a direct consequence of our Awards programme, which heroes the perspective of the expert critic.

Why do we do this every year? It’s not just to honour the industry (although that’s a big part of it). It’s also to inspire our readers, and make sure they have the best possible time for their money. You can see the lists for yourself in Sydney and Melbourne, just like 70,000 of our readers have, in the month since the new lists went live.
