Time Out Food and Drink Editor (Sydney)

Location: Sydney

About this role

Time Out Australia is looking for an enthusiastic and tenacious Food and Drink Editor to join Time Out’s Sydney team. The position is full time, and the editor will be covering Sydney’s hospitality scene, including bars, restaurants, cafés, pubs, breweries and events, as well as the latest trends and news. The editor will also write about other aspects of Time Out Sydney’s patch, including things to do, venues and festivals.

The successful applicant will live and breathe Sydney’s food and drink scene and be ready to hit the ground running with original feature ideas that connect our audience with the most exciting hospitality venues and events in their city. Ideally they will already have an extensive network of contacts and will be a confident interviewer and writer, as well as have some commissioning experience.

This editor must be a team player who works collaboratively with the editorial team to meet team objectives to create content that engages an entire city. Over time they will be assigned duties requiring more independent initiative as they gain more experience in the role. The Food and Drink Editor will perform their journalistic duties under supervision from the Time Out Sydney Editor.

The successful applicant will be a fast, accurate and creative writer and will be required to write reviews, venue listings and feature stories every week. They will also be keen to visit and review restaurants and bars across the city, as well as attending openings, launches and other events and participating in Time Out videos and other social media content. From time to time, the editor will also contribute to commercial briefs and write sponsored content. At the same time, they’ll know how to maintain the editorial integrity that has made Time Out a leader in the lifestyle journalism space for more than 50 years, and ensure the independence of its coverage.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Journalism experience, ideally in food media and/or hands-on hospitality experience

  • An excellent palate, the ability to describe vividly what they’re tasting (without relying on clichés) and a wide-ranging familiarity with food terminology and world cuisines

  • A thorough understanding of and enthusiasm for the hospitality scene in Sydney

  • An everlasting supply of ideas for stories to write

  • Excellent attention to detail and grammatical skills

  • Familiarity with analytics tools like Parse.ly or Google Analytics

  • Strong interviewing skills

  • An understanding of defamation and intellectual property laws in Australia

  • The ability to learn new applications and software quickly

  • Experience in using social media and SEO to grow new audiences and inspire existing audiences to engage more deeply with a range of content

  • A passion for going out! There is the expectation that the journalist will attend events, openings and interviews and won’t be hesitant to say yes to opportunities

  • Strong relationship-building skills, relating to both internal and external stakeholders

  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and assignments at once

  • The ability to meet tight, daily deadlines
